The Bat Cats got a double dose of good news when they needed it. Nick Mingione provided an update on injured superstar Tyler Bell, and then the Cats followed that up with a nice home win against Western Kentucky.

Let’s start with the big news: Nick Mingione provided a nice little update on Tyler Bell ahead of the game Wednesday night.

Tyler Bell is taking BP and light infield work

“He’s progressing along. Feels like he’s getting better and stronger. So he’s taking his groundballs, and he’s taking BP now. Seems as he’s progressing well so far.”

Bell has been out since opening day, when he dove and injured his shoulder when it got stuck in the grass and field in Greensboro. He was marked out indefinitely, and to see that he is taking batting practice and groundballs just 11 days later is pretty good.

And then to finish the day off, the Cats’ offense exploded for 20 hits against Western Kentucky. Every player in the lineup drove in at least one run except Luke Lawrence. Lawrence, though, was 3-6 on the night, so it wasn’t like he was bad.

Chase Alderman bounced back from his 5 runs allowed to Morehead State last week to cut that down to 2 this week, but the bullpen gave up 7 runs.

Still some work to do for the Cats, who used a 3-run 7th to pull away from Western 13-9.
