Peter Jackson is interested in making a new The Lord of the Rings movie. Jackson previously directed The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King, and all three The Hobbit films.

While speaking with Empire in celebration of The Fellowship of the Ring's 25th anniversary, Jackson shares that the rumored secret cut of the trilogy does not exist, emphasizing that "It would be the extended cut with a few extra seconds of something here and there; it wouldn’t be worthwhile doing."

However, Jackson is interested in creating a Lord of the Rings mega-documentary featuring behind-the-scenes footage that has never been seen before and diving deeply into how the movies were made. A challenge has been convincing the studio to make the project happen given its ambitious nature. Check out Jackson's comments below:

The footage contains alternative takes, it contains bloopers, it contains a bit more of a sense of the mechanics of making the films. But to this day, I haven’t persuaded [the studio], because obviously it’s a big undertaking.

This would not be the first time that behind-the-scenes footage from The Lord of the Rings movies has been shown, as in-depth bonus features, known as the Appendices, are available on the DVDs of the extended editions.

Despite there already being hours of this content, Jackson's comments confirm that there is still more that fans have not seen. While there would definitely be widespread appeal in bloopers and more insight into how the beloved movies were made, the alternative takes are likely what would generate the most interest.

This could potentially include deleted scenes that fans already know about, including Arwen (Liv Tyler) fighting at Helm's Deep in The Two Towers and a flashback to young Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) and Arwen in The Fellowship of the Ring. There is also the possibility of the documentary featuring alternative takes that audiences have never heard of before.

In addition to the central role that Jackson played in adapting J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, he would also be well-suited to the project because of his history with documentaries. After the release of the final Hobbit movie, he directed documentaries and docuseries, from focusing on World War II in They Shall Not Grow Old to celebrating The Beatles.

While the mega-documentary is not official, Jackson remains involved in The Lord of the Rings franchise as it continues to expand. He was a producer on the 2024 anime movie The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim and is also a producer on The Hunt for Gollum movie. It will be directed by Andy Serkis, who is reprising his role as the titular character. Ian McKellen is confirmed to be returning for it as well and has teased a Gandalf and Frodo reunion.
