The upcoming Divinity could be the perfect Baldur's Gate 3 follow-up, but until then, it might be better to look backwards than forwards. If you haven't played the first two Baldur's Gate games, that should be the obvious option. If you have, Baldur's Gate 2: Rebirth could be the perfect blend of the old and the new.

As spotted by DSOG, a recent YouTube trailer for Baldur's Gate 2: Rebirth showcases the total conversion mod in action, highlighting a new setting, characters, quests, and more. Rebirth takes place in Cormyr, a nation found in the interior of Faerûn rather than on the Sword Coast. In the context of the mod, Cormyr is "on the brink of collapse," and its fate may hinge on a caravan slave in possession of a newfound dagger.

For all intents and purposes, Baldur's Gate 2: Rebirth is promising a totally new game. The website for Rebirth claims that a main story playthrough will take 15-20 hours, while engaging in side content could push that number to 30 or even higher. A progress indicator on the homepage suggests that 75 out of 82 new areas have been completed, along with all 169 minor quests, three out of 20 medium quests, and zero out of 10 large quests.

Like the original Baldur's Gate, there's also free-roaming exploration, something that Baldur's Gate 2 cut down on. In total, the mod is divided into nine areas, with five major cities, a long list of smaller towns, and an explorable forest.

Although the ambition of Baldur's Gate 2: Rebirth seems staggering, there's already a lot to show for it. The team estimates a Q2 2026 release, and a recent update on Facebook suggests that a release in the vicinity of Easter is currently likely. Baldur's Gate 2: Rebirth's development has apparently been a "long journey," but the developers clearly waited to reveal the project until a reasonable finish line was actually in sight.

Of course, Baldur's Gate 2: Rebirth won't hit every note that Baldur's Gate 3 or the Divinity: Original Sin games did, as it's based on the foundation of BioWare classics rather than Larian titles. There's no companion romance, for example, and overall, "the idea is to have a game in the spirit of Baldur's Gate 1."

The Baldur's Gate 2: Rebirth website currently features AI art for companions, but the FAQ states that this is only a placeholder.

Either way, a fantasy CRPG is a fantasy CRPG, and this looks like it could be a great one. Whether you're a long-time Baldur's Gate fan or just someone looking to fill the gap before Divinity, keeping an eye on Baldur's Gate 2: Rebirth might pay off.
