If the New York Yankees end up signing Bo Bichette, the move would do more than just add another star bat to the lineup, as it could be the final decision on what they want to do with Jasson Dominguez.

According to Thomas Harrington of MLB.com, a Bichette signing could effectively lock Dominguez into a big everyday role, and potentially close the door on other offseason plans.

“Even with a significant gap in their talks with Bellinger, a reunion with the outfielder remains possible for the Yankees. However, a Bichette deal would probably shut that door permanently -- and perhaps cement Jasson Domínguez as the team’s starting left fielder heading into camp.

“The Yankees could also explore the trade market for an outfielder, but with limited options available and Bichette covering the team’s need for a big bat, New York might be comfortable turning left field over to Domínguez. Due to the hype that surrounded him as a teenager and the elbow injury he suffered shortly after his 2023 debut, leading to Tommy John surgery and limiting his availability in ’24, it feels like the Yankees have spent ages waiting for Domínguez to emerge. But he’ll only be 23 on Opening Day, with a mere 529 big league plate appearances under his belt. So there’s still time for the switch-hitter to become a fixture in the Yankees’ outfield,” he wrote.

This feels like Cody Bellinger wouldn’t return if it were to happen.

Sticking with Dominguez, he has been talked about for so long, and arrived with such overwhelming hype that it might be unfair to give up on him just yet.

On the flip side, this is the Yankees we’re talking about.

If the Yankees add Bichette, it likely means they’re done shopping for offensive help or would only do so for cheap talent.

From an organizational standpoint, I don’t hate the idea, but I just keep thinking what the old Yankees would’ve done, and that’s sign Bichette and another star outfielder.

Instead of crowding the outfield or chasing a short-term fix, the Yankees would be signaling trust in Dominguez’s future and there’s something to be said about that.
