Rent controls are being called for in a new nationwide demonstration taking place next month.

The London Renters Union is inviting campaigners to join the demonstration on April 18.

It is the latest element to the union’s campaign to make housing more affordable.

Rising rents

It claims the demonstration will bring more than 50 organisations representing renters, workers and housing campaigners from across the country.

Many of us cut back on essentials just to pay rent.”

In its campaign literature, it insisted that “rising rents are driving record levels of homelessness’.

It continues: “Many of us cut back on essentials just to pay rent. While landlords and developers make record profits, the rest of us are at breaking point.

“Across Europe, housing movements are taking to the streets and winning. Let’s do the same here.”

It suggests that people can be involved in a variety of ways on the day, including handing out fliers and posters, or making phone calls to help organise the event.

Rent controls

This week, the campaigners are also holding a panel discussion to put forward the case for rent controls.

The panel discussion is being held at Hamilton House in Euston this Thursday, bringing together LRU and allied groups.

The event is supported by the launch of a new pamphlet and is focused on “why rent controls should be among the central demands of the contemporary left”.
