As part of its Cut the Rent campaign, London Renters Union (LRU) says it is “ramping up” its push for rent controls by calling on members and aligned organisations to come together to draw up its rent control demands for the capital’s rental market.
Rent controls are central to breaking the exploitation at the heart of this system.”
It argues that “rising rents are wrecking our lives and closing schools, hollowing out communities and driving up homelessness”, adding that “rent controls are central to breaking the exploitation at the heart of this system”.
LRU says it has been fighting for rent controls through “powerful actions and determined campaigning”, winning backing from unions and politicians and pushing the debate “into the mainstream”. It says it now needs to decide “what kind of rent controls we want” and set out what is needed from rent controls here in London.
A programme of events begins with a panel discussion at Hamilton House in Euston on Thursday 12 March, bringing together LRU and allied groups to put forward the case for rent controls. The event is supported by the launch of a new pamphlet and is focused on “why rent controls should be among the central demands of the contemporary left”.
SpeakersSpeakers on the panel include LRU member and pamphlet author Siobhán Dhònnchaidh, Friends of the Earth Executive Director Asad Rehman, representatives from the Palestinian Youth Movement and the National Education Union. The event will be chaired by ‘Pete’ (no surname provided), LRU Coordinating Group Co-Convenor and Hackney branch member.
It will be followed by what LRU describes as the “next step” of the campaign — a members-only workshop for active LRU members on Sunday 6 April, aimed at formalising the union’s rent control demands for London.
