CJ Allen enters this year's draft process as the next NFL prospect in a long line of Georgia linebackers built on speed, instincts, and violence.

But it's Allen's brainy defensive processing and leadership chops that show why he's attractive to coach Todd Bowles and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Buccaneers are set to make their first selection on opening night at this year's draft, with the No. 15 pick, on Thursday, April 23, in Pittsburgh. The team owns a total of seven picks this year, including three in the top 100.

In the meantime, Bucs Roundtable will take a closer look at a range of prospects headed for the 2026 draft that might jell with Tampa Bay's current roster, coaching staff, and the team's X's and O's strategies.

Our series has also profiled Texas A&M edge rusher Cashius Howell and Miami defensive end Akheem Mesidor, along with Indiana linebacker Aiden Fisher and Penn State offensive lineman Vega Ioane as well as South Carolina safety Jalon Kilgore.

In this entry, we turn the spotlight on Barnesville, Georgia, native CJ Allen.

A former top‑100 recruit who chose the Bulldogs over nearly every major SEC program, Allen developed into the centerpiece of Georgia’s defense by his junior and senior seasons. His blend of range, physicality, and processing makes him one of the most complete off‑ball linebackers in this class -- a modern three‑down defender with real green‑dot potential.

Allen arrived in Athens as a highly regarded prospect out of Lamar High School, an hour south of Atlanta, where he starred as a two‑way athlete with elite testing numbers and natural defensive instincts.

Georgia saw the 6-foot, 230-pound bulldog as the next step in the evolution of their inside linebacker pipeline -- fast enough to play in space, strong enough to survive the SEC trenches, and smart enough to handle the communication load in Kirby Smart’s complex system.

His freshman season offered a glimpse of what was coming. Injuries in the linebacker room thrust him into early action, and he responded with poise, physicality, and a veteran‑like understanding of run fits. By 2024, he had carved out a rotational role, and by 2025 he was the unquestioned leader of the inside linebacker unit.

Allen’s final two seasons showcased his full skill set: downhill explosiveness, sideline‑to‑sideline range, and the ability to diagnose plays before they fully develop. He became the tone‑setter for a Georgia defense that once again ranked among the nation’s best, earning All‑SEC recognition and emerging as one of the most reliable tacklers in the conference.

Allen is built compact and dense, with the kind of functional strength that shows up on contact. His frame mirrors recent Georgia linebackers like Nakobe Dean and Monty Rice — thick through the core, powerful through the hips, and capable of absorbing and delivering force.

The Upshot

Allen’s game is defined by instincts and urgency. He diagnoses run concepts quickly, triggering downhill speed with controlled aggression. His ability to slip blocks, stay square, and finish tackles cleanly makes him one of the most dependable run defenders in the class.

In coverage, Allen shows fluid hips and enough speed to carry tight ends and running backs through the intermediate levels. He’s at his best in zone, where his awareness and anticipation allow him to jump routes and close windows. Georgia also used him effectively as a blitzer, leveraging his timing and burst to create pressure.

His leadership is a major selling point. Allen became the vocal heartbeat of the Bulldogs’ defense, responsible for pre‑snap communication, alignment checks, and adjustments -- a critical trait for NFL evaluators.

Allen’s length is average for the position, which can show up when taking on longer interior linemen or contesting passes at full extension. While fast and explosive, he isn’t a rare athlete, and elite NFL offenses may test him horizontally. His man‑coverage technique is solid, but still developing, particularly against sudden route runners.

Prospect Draft Position

Allen projects as a starting inside linebacker with three‑down potential depending on scheme. His instincts, toughness, and leadership give him one of the highest floors in the linebacker class. He fits best in defenses that value communication, gap discipline, and hybrid pressure looks.
