One of the state’s top high school junior basketball players is on the move.

Joshua Henderson, the leading scorer and rebounder at Class 2A University, informed the school Wednesday that he is withdrawing. The 6-6 Henderson, the son of former Indiana star and NBA player Alan Henderson, was averaging 19.3 points and 7.1 rebounds in 17 games for the 13-7 Trailblazers.

Alan Henderson and his son both confirmed the move on Wednesday night, as did University coach Justin Blanding. It is unclear where Henderson’s next destination will be. They did not give a reason for the departure.

University’s next game is at KIPP Indy Legacy on Thursday night.

Henderson’s transfer would appear to be a major blow to University’s attempt to reach the 2A state finals for a second consecutive year. He averaged 7.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocked shots per game last year for the Trailblazers, who finished 20-10 and were state runners-up to Manchester.

University does have three senior guards – Faisal Mohamud (12.3 ppg, 3.2 assists), Blake Gray (12.2 ppg, 3.4 assists) and Josh McGee (10.1 ppg, 3.8 assists) – still leading the team. University will find out its draw in Sectional 42 at Cardinal Ritter on Sunday.

Henderson had 18 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots in University’s 71-49 loss to Westfield on Tuesday night.
