Prime Video canceled one of its most ambitious sci-fi shows after just one season even though it showed immense potential.

Some of the best modern sci-fi shows, like Fallout and The Expanse, are a part of Prime Video's catalog. However, like other streaming services, Prime Video, too, has abruptly canceled shows before they were given enough time to fully realize their narrative ambitions. One of these shows unfolded an original sci-fi story that seemed weirdly enthralling and immersive.

Unfortunately, just when the show was starting to get good, Prime Video canceled it.

Prime Video’s Night Sky Has A Strange But Compelling Story

Franklin and Irene on alien planet in Night Sky

Prime Video's Night Sky comes off as a quiet, indie sci-fi drama that keeps viewers hooked with its fantastical twists and turns. It focuses on an elderly couple, Franklin and Irene York (played by heavyweights J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek), who guard a massive secret: a chamber in their backyard teleports them to a distant alien planet.

For years, they believe the planet is deserted and enjoy watching it from a distance. However, their life turns upside down when a man suddenly emerges in the secret chamber, claiming that they are not the only ones who know about it.

A parallel story reveals that similar guardians exist across the globe and hold the responsibility of keeping an eye on the portals. These story beats in season 1 hint at the existence of a global or even inter-galactic secret society, which season 2 would have explored.

Unfortunately, just when Night Sky was starting to unfold the full scale of its storytelling potential, Prime Video pulled the plug on it.

Prime Video Cancelled Night Sky Too Soon

Night Sky's gripping mysteries were enough to keep viewers hooked throughout its runtime. However, what makes its sci-fi drama truly immersive and emotionally resonant was the performances of J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek. In its final moments, Night Sky also left viewers with many questions and a massive cliffhanger that raised a lot of anticipation for its next installment.

The show, however, was quietly erased from existence before it could even reach the peak of storytelling momentum.

Only a few years after its release, it almost seems like Night Sky has completely been forgotten. It could have been Prime Video's next big original sci-fi series if the streaming service had given it more time. Owing to this, it is unfortunate that it was axed after just one installment.
